Un grand nombre de travailleurs canadiens d\u00e9crivent ce facteur de risque comme \u00e9tant le plus important facteur de stress au travail (c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire le fait d\u2019avoir trop de travail et trop peu de temps). La capacit\u00e9 de gestion de la charge de travail est importante en raison de la relation particuli\u00e8re qui existe entre les exigences de travail, l\u2019effort intellectuel demand\u00e9 et la satisfaction au travail. Les exigences de travail r\u00e9duisent la satisfaction au travail, alors que l\u2019effort intellectuel, ou la latitude dans la prise de d\u00e9cision, augmente la satisfaction au travail. M\u00eame quand ils font face \u00e0 des exigences de travail \u00e9lev\u00e9es, les travailleurs qui ont le pouvoir de prendre des d\u00e9cisions seront plus susceptibles de bien r\u00e9ussir. Le fait d\u2019avoir une grande marge de man\u0153uvre dans la prise de d\u00e9cision favorise aussi l\u2019apprentissage et l\u2019exp\u00e9rience de comportements d\u2019adaptation positifs.<\/p>\n<p>Tout comme une machine ou un syst\u00e8me qui soumis \u00e0 une surcharge de travail sans temps de repos finira par l\u00e2cher, il en est de m\u00eame pour les humains. Ce principe s\u2019applique autant aux humains qu\u2019aux machines. L\u2019employ\u00e9 qui fait face \u00e0 des exigences croissantes sans avoir la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019exercer un contr\u00f4le sur sa charge de travail finit par ressentir une grande fatigue physique, psychologique et \u00e9motionnelle, ainsi qu\u2019une augmentation du stress et de la tension. Cela nuit au rendement. Chez les personnes \u00e9puis\u00e9es \u00e9motionnellement, le sentiment d\u2019accomplissement s\u2019estompe et fait place \u00e0 un sentiment accru d\u2019incomp\u00e9tence.
